Guide to Carports

A carport is a structure that offers the same functions as a garage because it can be used to provide protection for cars and other vehicles. While the garage usually has walls to separate your vehicle from the outdoors, the carport is an open type of garage that has no walls, and its roof is only supported by beams in each corner.

Since there are only a few materials required to build a carport compared to a closed garage, it is a much cheaper alternative if you don’t want to spend a lot of money on your car’s parking space. Some people have compared a carport to a tent, but the difference between the two is that the tent is used to provide shelter for people and pets, while the carport is mainly used for vehicles.

Early Use of the Carport

Frank Lloyd Wright, a famous architect, first used the term “carport” to describe the structure that he designed for the house of a man named Herbert Jacobs, which was built within Madison, Wisconsin in 1946. To explain to Jacobs why he created the carport for the house, Wright stated that a car doesn’t need an intricate shelter, and vehicles are built durably that it doesn’t need a lot of protection, unlike a horse in a barn.

But before Wright coined the term for the structure, there have already been carports built in houses all around the United States, but they simply call it a garage. Since there is plenty of dissimilarities between a garage and a carport, Wright used a new name for the structure to differentiate it from standard garages.

Carport Materials

Before building a carport in your property, you should first request a permit in the nearest local government office to build a structure in your home. Most states require a building permit, so don’t take the risk of not getting one while a construction crew is working on your carport.

Most carports today are made of wood or metal. Wooden materials give a rustic look to your carport, which could match the aesthetics of gardens, front yard, or back yard if they are filled with greeneries. The downside to using wooden materials is that it might get cracks or other damages over time, and they might become home to termites that will slowly destroy the wooden parts of your carport.

Metal parts are much more durable compared to wooden ones, as it would take years before you can see damages in the structure. However, if you don’t properly maintain metal parts, it would rust and start corroding, which would eventually lead to the whole structure collapsing, similar to what termites can do to wooden carports. To remedy this problem, builders are using stainless steel, aluminum, and other kinds of metals that don’t rust. However, non-rusting metal parts can be quite expensive, and that’s why most people only use these metals in important pieces, such as the carport’s roof and foundation.

Portable Carports

If you don’t want to deal with the disadvantages of having a permanent carport, then you should consider buying a portable carport that can be stored and reused if you don’t need protection for your car all the time. Portable carports are often made with durable and long-lasting materials, and if ever it breaks, you can easily buy a new one if you have the budget.

Also, while permanent carports are often open, portable ones usually have closed and open options that you can use depending on your car’s needs in different situations.

A good open portable carport is the Abba Patio 10 x 20 Feet Outdoor Carport that has a steel frame coated with a special white powder, which can protect the frame from rust and chipping. The Abba Patio Outdoor Carport’s roof is made of three-layer polyethylene that provides UV protection and water resistance.

If you want a closed portable carport, Abba Patio also has a Carport with Removable Side Panels option, which is made from the same materials as the previously mentioned carport, but with added side panels or covers that also have UV-resisting properties. One fabric panel of the Abba Patio carport is a screen door can be detached using the zippers stitched in the material, but it can also be rolled up using the bungee cords included in the package.

Another excellent closed carport is the ShelterLogic All-Steel Instant Garage that is slightly curved in shape. Similar to the Abba Patio carport, the ShelterLogic Instant Garage’s frame is made from white powder-coated steel to prevent corrosion and peeling. The roof and side panels are colored in sandstone, and it is water-resistant, heat-resistant, and UV-resistant. Along with the high-quality frame and cover, it also comes with eight ShelterLock stabilizers that can be inserted at each foot of the frame to make the carport more stable.

If you have a bigger vehicle, there is also the ShelterLogic Garage-in-a-Box SUV/Truck Shelter that is specially made to house trucks, SUVs, and other large cars. Since it can be quite heavy for some types of soil to carry its weight due to its large size, it is recommended that you buy the ShelterLogicShelterAuger Anchor Kit when you purchase the SUV/Truck Shelter to give it more stability.

Many variants of carports are now widely available in the market, and most people tend to go for portable carports since it is the cheapest option. No matter which type of carport you choose to build or purchase, it will still be able to fulfill its primary function, which is to give protection for your vehicle.
