Owning a residential property with an attached garage may be convenient in terms of accessibility. You can even turn your garage into a workshop, a hobby room, or as an extra living space (if it is big enough to accommodate them).
However, having an attached garage might lead to these two most common problems:
- It’s too noisy from the other room – one of the usual problems of having an attached garage is that noise from the other room travels to it. The garage is an extension of your living space, so you are just an earshot away from the noise happening in the next room – the rumbling sound of a washing machine, or the noise of your kids playing. And that bothers a lot you while you’re trying to fix your car or making a mechanical toy in your workstation.
- The room above makes a garage feel cold – while having a room above your garage is advantageous during the summer months, it can be too uncomfortably cold during the winter season. Using a heater on a regular basis can lead to high energy bills. And even at its capacity, it still won’t be enough to keep your garage sufficiently warm during the frigid months.
Insulating your garage may be the ultimate solution to these problems. Don’t insulate your garage walls and ceilings without insulating the garage door.
Garage doors are usually massive, and some of them almost take the space of an entire wall! That is why it is important why you should insulate it. An insulated garage door is useful during both winter and summer months and/or climates as it regulates the room temperature of your garage. Depending on the season, an insulated garage door makes your garage either comfortably warmer or cooler, without the need to use a heater or an air condition unit.
Here are the other benefits of having an insulated garage door:
- It increases thermal efficiency;
- It reduces energy bills;
- It reduces noise;
- It reduces carbon emissions.
How can an insulated garage door keep your garage comfortably warm or cool? Of course, it lies in the construction. There are many types of materials that are used for garage insulation:
Fiberglass is probably the most commonly used type of insulation material for garages. It is available in rolls or pre-cut batts, which are typically backed with paper or foil that serves as a vapor retardant. It fits between wall studs and ceiling joists of your garage for easy installation. It is the most affordable option, too. If you are on a tight budget, but you also need to insulate your garage (including the garage door), fiberglass is the ideal option.
Rigid foam insulation is available in large sheets (usually four by eight feet, with a thickness of 1/2” to four inches). It is typically made of expanded polystyrene, a material which is similar to Styrofoam, or extruded polystyrene, and polyisocyanurate. This type of insulation offers a high insulating per inch of thickness, which makes it suitable for insulating thin walls or garage doors. It also easily cuts into smaller sizes to fit any space. NOTE: If you want to create an insulated garage door that can resist fires, keep in mind that not all rigid foam insulations are fire-resistant. Thus, they not recommended for exposed conditions and applications.
Spray foam insulation is probably the most expensive type of garage door insulation. Its application is unique because it is sprayed with a gun, which releases two different high-end materials in one go. When these two materials meet, they bond a foam, which becomes very strong and can fit in small spaces. These materials that make up the foam are formulated to be energy-efficient, which makes sense if you are turning your garage into a living area or a workshop.
Cellulose insulation is usually made of recycled newspapers, which are treated with chemicals to make it fire- and vermin-resistant. The use of recycled materials makes this type of insulation environment-friendly; no wonder it has grown in popularity among garage owners. Cellulose insulation is applied to the walls, doors, and ceilings with a blowing machine. With this type of insulation’s loose nature, it can only be applied to finished walls, ceilings, and doors.
Garage door insulation and sealing
Again, you should not insulate the entire space in your garage without insulating the big garage door.
There are insulation kits that you can buy at your nearest hardware store or online stores. You can also cut pieces of the rigid foam to fit the space of your garage door. When insulating a metal garage door or any other garage door with some metal construction, keep in mind that the ribbings are an excellent conductor of heat. You have to insulate those metal ribbings, too. Otherwise, your garage door’s overall thermal performance will be below par the rated performance of the insulation itself.
Weather-sealing is also important when insulating a garage door. Create a seal along the top and sides of the door with special garage door trims with a built-in weather-resistant strip. Seal the bottom part of the door with a “bottom seal”, which consists of a rubber gasket. It is available in different sizes to cover the gap between the floor and the bottom of the garage door.
